I Need Coffee - Episode 223 - Weekly BC Review! (Sep 4, 2026)
1. DIY Wins Compound**
Cleaned a mini-split AC unit himself in extreme heat/humidity and saved $500–800. Parallel lesson: doing theork yourself (marketing, repairs, development) teaches things you never learn by outsourcing.
2. Omarchy (DHH’s opinionated Arch-based Linux)
After the long Lex Fridman interview, Steve tried the new Quattro version. Extremely fast install, clean, focused. Attractive if you can live fully on Linux. Not viable for him due to Microsoft Office dependency, but worth watching for pure developer environments.
3. Spill-Proof Coffee Reality
Hydro Flask lids fail on California school speed-bump routes. Switched to Contigo (true sealing lid with gasket) for car use. Small, practical upgrade that eliminates constant cleanup.
4. Daniela’s Transformation Arc (Highlight Story)
Former restaurant worker in Berlin, El Salvador → English Academy scholarship → full-time marketing associate → now installing Node, npm, and Claude Code CLI and beginning website development/maintenance. From zero computer work experience to maintaining multiple sites (Blue Dragonfly, ERP Center of Excellence, etc.). WordPress is being retired in favor of AI-assisted modern sites.
5. New Dev Hardware
$349 ThinkCentre M70Q (10th-gen i7, 32 GB, 1 TB) finally arrived after a two-week UPS cross-country loop. Becomes the always-on Windows 11 development machine reachable via Tailscale/Headscale.
6. Business Central 28.4 Timestamp Breaking Change
Microsoft altered timestamp behavior (timezone offset handling). UTC timestamps shifted by 3600 seconds. Broke license validation and registration logic that guards against replay attacks.
- Fable 5.1 diagnosed the exact change in minutes from a telemetry screenshot.
- Full change request + design + development plan front-loaded → one-shot fix.
- New app + library app versions published to AppSource and live in ~15 minutes. Rare and welcome speed.
7. Everyday AI Beyond Coding
- Diagnosed failing hydro-pneumatic brake pump on a 2015 Prius (and similar system on a 4Runner) from a description of the noise.
- Guided a non-technical friend through multimeter diagnosis and replacement of a complex low-voltage switch (even corrected the wrong part at the counter).
- Financial planning (529s, college, tax), house-selling/building checklists, and a coffee roaster control app built by someone with zero programming background.
8. Client Expectations Have Shifted
Wall Street banks are pushing Big Law to reduce fees because they now expect AI to make research faster and cheaper. The old “do we tell customers we use AI?” question is outdated — customers increasingly demand the efficiency gains.
9. Oyez.org + AI Hallucination Caution
Listening to Supreme Court oral arguments (geo-fence warrant / Fourth Amendment case). Perplexity incorrectly stated a 6-3 decision, then tried to imply the user was confused when corrected to the actual 5-4. Classic gaslighting behavior — always verify critical facts.
10. Business Central Change Log Latency
Enabling change log entries for fields showed a multi-minute delay before entries began appearing. Heads-up when testing.
11. Claude Language Cleanup
Anthropic acknowledged “mannered prose.” Experimenting with prompts to strip the contorted AI writing style.
12. Backup Reality Check
After finally restoring Veeam (320+ days without working backups), discovered an aging SSD was failing and the VHD was unrecoverable. Another reminder: backups only matter when they actually run and are restorable.
13. Security Incidents This Week
- 153 million U.S. driver’s licenses stolen from an identity-verification provider used by Hertz, FedEx, Target, GameStop, and many others (including high-profile individuals).
- Dropbox/Lenovo free-account partnership allowed unauthorized access by registering a Lenovo ID with someone else’s email.
- Researcher previously threatened by Microsoft is now dropping CrowdStrike Falcon zero-days (turning the security product itself into the attack vector).
14. AI Project Retrospective – Eye-Opening Results
Fed an entire multi-month project’s proposals, meeting transcripts, notes, and documents into Claude.
Result: 155 change requests identified (62 requirement, 33 design, 13 deliverable, 10 decision reversals, etc.). 94 of them increased budget or effort.
Also surfaced decision-log gaps and repeated back-and-forth that humans had forgotten. Extremely powerful (and demoralizing if not framed carefully). Goal is moving toward near-real-time analysis after every status meeting.
15. Team Momentum
- Joselyn: financials + support.
- David: data imports / data exchange definitions (CCD+ EFT bug investigation).
- Ronald: Continia Document Capture + ERP Academy + English Academy.
- Franklin: PTE change requests + bug research with Claude.
- Fatima: drove the full retrospective; building weekly/ real-time project health checks; Christmas festival planning (150+ kids).
- Daniela: now the fourth Claude Code CLI user in the organization and taking on website development.
